The almost ready-made Klangzeichner (Soundscribbler) consists of an active loudspeaker and three felt tip pens driven by the acoustic energy of musical compositions. Starting from the idea of written music as silent <span style="font-style:italic">Augenmusik</span> (music for the eyes) I began questioning the borders between categories of perception. Are we really able to see music in these drawings or is the abstract form of written acoustic movement similar to reading visual scores? The drawings by the Klangzeichner are not linear as the traced lines cross and overwrite each other during the recording process. Our concepts of continuous time sequences and time structures are not effective in fully analyzing the Klangzeichnungen (Soundscripts). These Sounddrawings also reflect a personal understanding of time based on Gilles Deleuze's interpretation of Henri Bergson's duration and close to Martin Heidegger's analyses in <span style="font-style:italic"> Sein und Zeit </span> as, to me, being and time is not a purely straightforward progression, instead it can be seen as an overlapping process that takes place within us. It draws past and future into one state in which endings and endlessness meet. The visual aesthetics can be reminiscent of early works by Cy Twombly or the movement of <span style="font-style:italic">art informel</span> but what still pleases me most are the Jackson Pollockesque pictures achieved by attaching white out pens to the speaker. These are especially beautiful because the steadily oozing paint leaves evidence not only of sound but of time itself by continuously drawing the duration and pitch until a new frequency changes the direction of the device. The video was shot through glass from below. At the end the Klangzeichner falls off the edge, as it does every single time when you re not there to stop it \___/<br /></p> </div> </div> </div> <!--[Film Position]> <![endif]--> <div id="PageDiv" style="position:absolute; left: -470px; top: -650px; width:100px; height:20px; z-index:1; overflow:visible"> <param name="quality" value="high"> <param name="bgcolor" value="#FFFFFF"> <param name="allowfullscreen" value="true"> <embed src="http://janinehenkes.com//Resources/movie_player.swf?file=http://www.bildermusik.de/s2.flv&amp;controlbar=over&amp;skin=http://janinehenkes.com//Resources/movie_skin.swf&amp;image=http://bildermusik.de/s1.png" style="margin-bottom:0px; padding-bottom:0px" quality="high" bgcolor="#FFFFFF" width="480" height="269" name="movie" align="" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" allowfullscreen="true"> </object> <!--[Film Position End]> <![endif]--> <div id="id3" style="height: 179px; left: 509px; position: absolute; top: 50px; width: 706px; z-index: 1; " class="style_SkipStroke shape-with-text"> <div class="text-content graphic_textbox_layout_style_default_External_706_179" style="padding: 0px; "> <div class="graphic_textbox_layout_style_default"> <p style="padding-top: 0pt; " class="paragraph_style">Headlines<br /></p> </p> <p class="paragraph_style">The brilliant choreographer <a class="class1" title="Interview" href="http://tanzforumberlin.de/trailer241.php">Ehud Darash</a> worked on an ingenious 40 minute pattern-based dance piece at the beginning of this year. During our rehearsal time in the beautiful Festsaal at <a class="class1" title="Homepage" href="http://sophiensaele.de/">Sophiensæle</a> Berlin, which I was already acoustically familiar with from my time with <a class="class2" title="Homepage" href="http://www.navigators.de/index.php?id=23&amp;L=1">Nico and the Navigators</a>, we decided to use an amplification of the heating system combined with the hissing sound of theater lamps to construct a musical score for the piece; tuning and shifting the frequencies of the place with minimal psychoacoustic tricks. To emphasize the dramaturgic development we combined this soundscape with fake outside noises and played back a bit of quiet music that seemed to come from rooms behind the stage. I used five active speakers about 5m to 15m positioned above the heads of the audience and a sub-bass channel from the dressing room. The video was shot during a rehearsal and doesn't show any of this. It s just a short introduction to the unique flair of the piece.<br /></p> <p class="paragraph_style"><br /></p> <p class="paragraph_style"><br /></p> </div> </div> </div> <!--[Film Position]> <![endif]--> <div id="PageDiv" style="position:absolute; left: 0px; top:300px; width:100px; height:15px; z-index:1; overflow:visible"> <param name="quality" value="high"> <param name="bgcolor" value="#FFFFFF"> <param name="allowfullscreen" value="true"> <embed src="http://janinehenkes.com//Resources/movie_player.swf?file=http://www.bildermusik.de/s3.flv&amp;controlbar=over&amp;skin=http://janinehenkes.com//Resources/movie_skin.swf&amp;image=http://bildermusik.de/s4.png" style="margin-bottom:0px; padding-bottom:0px" quality="high" bgcolor="#FFFFFF" width="480" height="269" name="movie" align="" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" allowfullscreen="true"> </object> <!--[Film Position End]> <![endif]--> <div id="id2" style="height: 20px; left: 509px; position: absolute; top: 30px; width: 730px; z-index: 1; " class="style_SkipStroke shape-with-text"> <div class="text-content graphic_textbox_layout_style_default_External_730_308" style="padding: 0px; "> <div class="graphic_textbox_layout_style_default"> <p style="padding-top: 0pt; " class="paragraph_style">Artnapping<br /></p> </p> <p class="paragraph_style">Last July in Paris the Speech Collective stole a 10.000 Euro statue for a few hours. We managed to smuggle the heavy bronze figure, <span style="font-style:italic">La Jeunesse</span> (Youth), out of Chaillot s dark cellar where no one really took notice of her. We slipped passed the doorman while Camille staged a fake interview and then placed Youth on the lively and touristy Palais de Chaillot. Liberating the statue from her <span style="font-style:italic">sad and dark circumstances</span> felt very satisfying and seemed in the same moment to gracefully resurrect the power of site-specific art. <p class="paragraph_style">Underlying the actual performance and documentation of the deed the musical aspect was comprised of two basic parts. The first was the de-placement of the statue. This provoked reactions from passers-by as well as raised the question whether certain traditional art might have more function and effectiveness if shown in unconventional ways. The second part of the piece involved a recorded soundscape of this sunny journey which was played back from within the hollow belly of the statue once re-placed her old position in Chaillot. The idea was to transfer and preserve the sculpture s experience in time and allow her to retell her story to visitors walking passed. As it was, during the festival <span style="font-style:italic">Imaginez maintenant</span> there were so many visitors around that very few people recognized the newborn <span style="font-style:italic">Sonic Youth</span>.
